Purple tiara tattoo on an ankle

Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A tattoo of a tiara on the ankle, with three rounded purple gems across the top and gold filigree scrollwork at the base. A border of small teal dots outlines the crown, and dark linework defines the shapes. The tattoo sits centrally on the ankle against a plain skin background, with plastic sheeting visible at the top edge of the frame.

Bess Harrow had set the third purple drop into its cradle before she noticed the order slip was for a different Tuesday. The Mayor's wife had wanted something for the Whitsun fair, not a crown for a shop window, but the wire was already bent and the filigree already curled, and Bess had never once in thirty years left a piece half finished.

So she finished it. She pinned the tiara to a square of blue velvet in the back room, and every evening after the gas was lit she picked at the small teal beads with a bradawl, setting each one a hair's width from the last, until the border ran round like a line of cold water. Her nephew Tom thought it looked like something a pantomime dame would sulk over. Bess said a crown only had to be worn by somebody who needed it.

The Mayor's wife never collected it. In October a girl came in out of the rain asking for a cheap repair on a dress strap, saw the velvet, and stood very still in front of the window. Bess didn't ask her name. She wrapped the tiara in tissue, wrote a single word on the paper, and pushed it across the counter, which was all the sale she had ever needed.

Tom found the word later, scratched into the lid of the empty tin: Fits. He never could tell whether his aunt had meant the crown or the girl, and she never told him, only put the kettle on and said the gas bill was a crime against decent people.
