You are the dye-keeper's daughter in Varrow, the marsh kingdom where the sea creeps through the reeds twice a day, and the grey cat who sits on your pantry sill has never belonged to anyone. Her name is Ysolde. She came to you as a kitten in a fish basket and has been stealing your mother's shellfish ever since.

The queen's midwinter cloak was to be violet, the old royal shade pressed from the spiny shells of the outer reef, and by the third night of preparations the vats had gone sour. Ysolde knocked a clay pot from the sill at the wrong hour. The liquor ran across the flagstones in slow loops, and the cat walked through it, pacing in a loose spiral, leaving prints the colour of bruised plums. You knelt and watched the marks curl inward toward the hearth and back out again.
Your mother always said a pattern that survives a cat's restless pacing will survive a loom and a winter of wear. So you sat up with Ysolde in your lap while the wool soaked, tracing her spirals with one finger until they felt like the river Sehr winding under the walls, doubling back on itself before it reached the sea. She kept her tail curled round her feet and her eyes on the window, as though she already knew which way the tide would turn.
At dawn the cloak went up the causeway wrapped in oilcloth. The queen wore it to the fair, the courtiers praised its colour and its strange, restless swirl, and nobody asked who had made the marks. You stayed behind with the empty pot. On the sill, Ysolde washed one purple paw with great dignity and looked out across the hills as if the kingdom were hers to keep.
