The tide was out when Bramble got loose on Tuesday, and she went straight down the slipway the way she used to go for your boots. I found her at the bottom with her nose in the weed and her tail going like she'd been expecting someone. Mum says she's daft. I say she's keeping a tally.

There's a line of prints across the wet concrete now, four to a set, with little dots where her claws caught the grit. Dad measured them with a bit of string on Wednesday and said they were nearer a fox than a collie, which was his way of being cross about the mess on the step. Then the wind came round from the east and every print filled with sand and lifted into curls, the way Gran's ribbon used to lift off the washing line, and for a minute the whole slip looked like something had been writing on it.

The Marguerite limped in at six this morning with her port side scraped to bare wood. Skip says you're to follow on the Hesper once her engine's sorted, so Sunday if the weather holds. I've swept the boat shed and put the kettle where you like it. Bramble has been sitting at the top of the slip since dawn, watching the harbour mouth with her ears up.

Come home on the first tide and walk down it yourself. You'll see where she's been.
