Black cat silhouette on the back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a seated cat, turned to look back over its shoulder, with two pale pointed shapes at the top of its head and pale eye shapes cut into the black. The edges are smooth and the fill is even, with no shading or fine detail. The tattoo is shown in black on pale skin, with a small mole visible beside it and the cat's tail curling down and around the lower body.

Dear Marjorie, the hedge behind the mill has a new tenant and I think you would like him. He is black as a boot-polish tin and sits on the stile every dusk, and whenever Mrs Pardoe lights her lamp he turns his head right over his shoulder, slow as a clock hand, to see who is looking. The Pardoe boys swear he has horns. I told them that is what comes of drinking cider behind the Plough.

Last Tuesday the fog came down off Haddon Wood so thick that Tom Carver, the baker's lad, walked straight into the millpond and came out up to his knees in weed. He was going round in circles, he said, until a cat sat down in the path in front of him and waited. Every time Tom stopped, the cat stopped. Every time he turned, the cat looked back at him over its shoulder with those pale eyes and walked on. It brought him out at the lych gate just as the church clock struck six, and then it was simply gone.
Mother says we should leave a saucer of milk for it, so I did, on the top of the stile, with a slice of the good ham beside it because I did not want the creature thinking we were mean. This morning the saucer was licked clean and the ham was untouched. Sitting on the wood in its place was one brass button, the same shape as those on Tom's coat, polished so bright I could see the hedge in it.
I have not told Tom. I think he would only go back into that wood to look for it, and I think the cat would rather he didn't. Write soon, and tell me whether cats in Bristol ever bring back what they borrow.
Your loving sister, Edith
