Purpose and Forgive script on abdomen
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare midriff showing black script lettering. The word Purpose sits above the navel in a flowing script, and a second word, which appears to read Forgive, runs diagonally on the left side of the abdomen. A very small bird outline sits further right, and the fine linework is crisp against the warm skin tone.

Owen, the wagons are parked on the lower field at Mold again, and the rain has got into the ticket box so the float has gone soft as bread. I'm writing because Mr Hollis finally sold the ghost train to a man from Rhyl, and he asked after you, which I didn't expect from him.

He gave me the old swallow off the organ before the van left. You'll remember it, the painted wooden bird Dad carved for the top of the pipes so the children would think it was flying. Hollis's grandson found it in a tea chest in the back of the generator shed. I've hung it on the wire above the coconut shy, where the lamp catches its tail when the wind comes off the hill, and the lads on the rides keep stopping to look up at it.
I found your note tucked under the chest lid, the pencil gone grey with handling. Purpose, you'd written, and under it Forgive, as if they were two jobs on the same rota. I stood there a long while trying to decide which one you'd been practising, and whether either one had ever been finished. Dad always said a fair runs on the second thing more than the first, because every rope and every rifle needs someone willing to let the last fellow off.
So I'm leaving the yard gate on the latch and the caravan light on. The wire will be humming by Thursday, and there's a space by the bird, and there's a cup of tea going cold on the step that's been meant for you since March. Come when the lamps are lit. I'll know your step on the gravel.
