Script quote tattoo on lower back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a person lying on their side on a patterned bed, with a white sheet covering the upper body and a plush toy resting nearby. A thin, dark script quote runs horizontally across the lower back, with the wording We live with the scars we choose. The ink is fine and uniform, and the soft natural light and simple bedroom setting keep the focus on the tattoo.

Mum sold the big top in March, though nobody came out to watch it come down. The canvas was patched so many times it looked like a map of the county, and the last tent pegs went into a skip behind the Co-op in Ashby. I stood in the car park with my hands jammed in my coat pockets, counting the six lads who'd turned up to help strike it, and I thought about Danny Oakes, who came off the high wire in 1994 and walked with a stick ever after.

Dad always said the scars were the act. Every bloke who'd been stitched up in the back of a Transit had a story, and he'd make them tell it at the bar of the Crown while Mum pulled pints for the locals. He never pretended his own knuckles hadn't been split by Brutus, the lion who hated Tuesdays. 'We live with the scars we choose,' he'd say, rubbing the old burn on his forearm where a flaming hoop had caught him in Skegness. He said it like a joke, but he meant it as a rule.

The lot was empty by four. I climbed into the cab of the last lorry and found the pickle jar of sawdust I'd scooped from the ring the night before the final show, the one Mum told me was just dirt. I held it up to the window and watched the light go through it, gold and grey. Then I unscrewed the lid, tipped it out over the cracked tarmac, and watched the wind carry it off towards the railway line, where the tracks still ran to towns that had forgotten we existed.
