Script lettering tattoo on the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a torso wearing a beige bralette and a thin gold chain across the waist with a small pendant. A black script lettering tattoo runs along the right side of the ribs, partly hidden by the bralette edge and cropped so only parts of the words are legible. The photo is warm and softly lit against a dark grey backdrop, with the tattoo in black ink only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had already closed the lower road when my grandmother's letter reached the refuge, and I read it twice beside the stove while the guide argued with the weather. She wrote in pencil, pressing so hard the words dented the paper on the other side. Her hand never wavered on the important lines, only on the small ones, the ones about her knees and the price of salt.

Her cousin Ruggero had carried it up the pass in October with a mule that bit everyone and a cough he would not admit to. He waited at the hut while I read, turning his cap in his hands, and when I looked up he said only that the chestnut tree by the old well had lost a limb in the autumn gales. The letter listed who had died that winter, who had married, who had gone down to Milan and not written back. Near the bottom was a line in her looping hand that I had to tilt toward the lamp to make out: keep the words Grandfather cut over the door in your head, they are the only thing that never needed repairing.

I had meant to go down at first light. Instead I borrowed the stub of pencil from the guide's pack and wrote back on the reverse of her page, in letters as careful as hers were careless. I told her about the pass, the cornices hanging like old sails, the marmot that stole my glove. I did not tell her I could still hear the well-rope creaking in the wind.

By morning the cloud had lifted off the ridge and the path was a white thread between two black teeth of rock. I folded the page twice and buttoned it inside my coat, where it sat against my ribs all the way down, warm from the stove and heavier than it had any right to be.
