Quote and safety pin on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the inner wrist shows the words "we're alright though" in a typewriter-style font, set above a line drawing of a safety pin. Four upright strokes are crossed by a fifth diagonal stroke beneath the text, forming a tally group. The linework is clean and thin with solid black fill, and the photo is taken straight on against a plain skin-toned background with some coloured fabric at the edge.

Dear Nan, The 17:42 to Carlisle has been cancelled again, so I am writing this on the back of a timetable at the end of platform four, where the heater under the bench still works if you sit close enough to the pipe. Mum's coat has split under the arm and I've pinned it shut with the big brass safety pin you gave me for my first school skirt. It's holding better than the coat deserves.

Every time a train is cancelled I make a mark on my wrist with the biro. Four upright, one across. Dad would have called it bad luck, but Wendell at the buffet says it's the most honest arithmetic on the whole line. Six strokes since Tuesday. The tannoy keeps apologising for any inconvenience, and a man with a trombone case has started tapping his thumbnail on the table edge in time with it, like he's counting too.
I asked Mum whether we'd be alright, going back to the flat with the damp patch shaped like Ireland, and she said what she always says, that the kettle doesn't care what the timetable thinks. So I've been writing the small things down where I can see them. The pin. The tally. The fact that Wendell gave me a second teacake without being asked.
The 19:10 is up on the board now, green letters flickering as if they might change their minds. Mum has the pin in her palm and I'm counting the steps to the barrier. Tell Grandad the tea was stewed but the company was good. We're alright, though. Love, Bea
