We're all mad here lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm shows the words We're all mad here tattooed in black ink, written in capital letters that run diagonally from the wrist towards the elbow. The lines are uniform and clean, with the letters evenly spaced and sharp against the skin. The background is a car interior with a dark wristband at the top of the frame, and the image is shot in natural light with a plain, cropped composition.

Sit down, sit down, you'll not hear the end of it standing. My grandfather swore this happened to a man called Ezra Pell, who kept the ferry at Hobb's Cut when the river still froze hard enough to walk on. Ezra had a way of looking at you sideways, grinning as if he knew the punchline before you'd heard the joke. Folk said he'd come up out of the reeds one November with no boat and no name, and nobody thought to ask.

One evening a stranger came down to the landing with a trunk and a bad cough, begging to be taken over to Wisbech before the tide turned. Ezra said the tide was in no hurry and neither was he. The stranger argued. Ezra just grinned and pointed at the water, where three lanterns bobbed along the channel though there were no boats beneath them. The stranger asked whether the whole parish had gone soft in the head. Ezra laughed until his shoulders shook and said, 'We're all mad here, friend. The trick is to know it and still row.'
The stranger paid his coppers and rowed himself across. The next morning the trunk was found on Ezra's step, full of pressed reeds and a map of a river that didn't exist. Ezra was nowhere to be found, and his grin, so they say, stayed on the bank for a good while after, hanging in the mist like a cat that had forgotten its body.
So if you're crossing the Cut tonight, mind the lanterns. They're only lamps. Probably.
