Quote and TARDIS on the upper chest
Lettering · Chest · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a handwritten quote in dark blue-black script, set over two lines, with a small blue TARDIS drawn to the right. The lettering has a loose, slightly uneven line weight and the TARDIS is filled with solid blue ink and fine outlines. The skin is lit softly against a plain background, with the text running diagonally across the frame.

Mrs Agnes Pollard had been the postmistress in Thornwick for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had ever asked her to post a box. So when a blue cabinet the height of a man appeared outside the chapel one Tuesday, its lamp unlit and its door swollen with damp, she did what any sensible person would do and wrote a note about it.

The man who stepped out had a coat the colour of wet slate and a scarf that seemed to be knitted from several other scarves. He asked her for the date, then the year, then whether the Wednesday post still went by the milk lorry. She told him it did. He looked so relieved that she brought him tea in the sorting room, where he sat on a sack of parcels and turned a pocket watch over and over in his fingers.
"Everyone thinks the ending is the hard part," he said, when she asked what he had been doing out there. "It isn't. We're all stories in the end, Mrs Pollard. The trick is only to make it a good one, eh?"
She thought about that for the rest of her round. By evening she had decided that a good one would involve her going home early for once. When she returned to the chapel the box had gone, and in its place lay a small brass franking stamp with a blue tower engraved on its face. She still keeps it in the drawer beside the stamps, and she still does not know where it was posted from.
