The bus from Carlisle was forty minutes late, so by the time Nell Haddow reached the booth at the far gate the queue had folded itself into the rain and nobody was talking. She had the stamp in one hand and a thermos in the other, and she was fairly sure the lorry driver ahead had lied about his cargo. Nobody told the truth at a checkpoint at two in the morning. They told stories, and it was her job to decide which ones were lies.

A woman in a green anorak slid her passport under the glass with a bus ticket tucked inside it. The name on the passport was Ruth Calloway. The name on the ticket was Ada Lune, and the date of birth matched neither. "We're all stories in the end," the woman said, smiling as if she had dropped a coin down a well and was waiting to hear it land.

Nell had heard worse. A man once swore to her he was his own grandfather. So she asked for the story and not the papers. The woman talked about a lighthouse keeper's daughter who walked north every winter to sell letters nobody had written, and about the ink she carried in a glass bottle so the words would not run in the rain. Nell stamped the passport twice, once for Ruth and once for Ada, and slid it back across the counter.

"Go on then," Nell said. "Just make it a good one."
