Quote in typewriter lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with a single line of small black lettering in a typewriter-style font, reading "in the hero of this story, i don't need saving." The letters are crisp, solid black and evenly spaced, with the line running across the arm. The soft grey and dark knit sleeve on the left and white bedding in the background give the image a muted, neutral palette.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate Inn for three days when Marguerite found the typewriter under the back stairs, its ribbon dried to the colour of weak tea. Someone had left a manuscript rolled in its carriage, twelve pages long, about a woman locked in a tower above a frozen valley. A man on a grey horse was riding up the pass to rescue her, and the story kept stopping to let him admire the view.

She read it by the stove while the wind pushed at the shutters. Mrs Aske, who ran the inn with a ring of keys and no patience for guests who asked about the telephone line, said the last writer had gone down the valley in October and never sent for his coat. Marguerite did not ask after the coat. She asked for a clean sheet of paper and a pot of tea, and when the tea came she sat down and wound the paper in.
She rewrote the tower. The woman in her version knew the stair was rotten and the horse was lame, so she took the rope from the woodshed and climbed down herself, one knot at a time, with Ivy the kitchen girl holding the other end and swearing at the cold. By the time the grey horse came over the ridge at dawn, the tower door stood open and the valley was full of their footprints.
The man stopped at the gate, cap in his hands, and found her shovelling the drive. "I came to fetch you," he said. She handed him the spade. Behind her on the table the typewriter sat with its last line still warm in the carriage, and the snow was already slipping off the sill in long, bright sheets.
