Five birds in flight on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a forearm showing five small solid black bird silhouettes arranged in a diagonal line, each shown in flight at a slightly different angle. The birds are rendered in clean, simple linework with flat black fill and no shading, set against pale skin. The composition is tight on the arm, with dark hair and a loose white knit sleeve softly out of focus in the background.

You are standing in the back scullery of Gull Rock Boarding House at six in the morning, the kettle not yet boiled, and Mrs Pascoe is already calling up the stairs about the bread. The guests have left the window open again. Through it come the starlings off the harbour wall, low and loose, and you count them the way your mother taught you to count stitches, one, two, three, four, five, before they bend away over the chimneys.

Five is also the number of rooms let for the season that Mrs Pascoe has not yet told you she is selling. You found the letter under the tea towels, the solicitor's name at the top, the word conveyance underlined twice in pencil. Nobody has said a word to you about it. You fold the paper back the way it was and go up to strip the beds in number three, where a man from Leeds left a shilling on the pillow and a note saying the sea air had done him good.
By noon the wind has swung south and the sheets crack on the line like sails. Mrs Pascoe finds you on the cliff path with your hands in your apron pockets. She does not ask what you know. She sits on the bench beside you, takes the same letter from her own coat, and tells you about the first summer she ran this house, when her husband wore that same look and had no idea where the birds went in winter.
Above the harbour the starlings wheel once, tip their wings together and head inland, away from the water. Before the bench has cooled under you, you decide that you will go with them.
