Black fine-line lettering reading "not all those who wander are lost" runs along the inner forearm.

Quote lettering along a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single line of black lowercase lettering in a clean sans-serif typeface runs diagonally across the forearm, from the wrist area towards the elbow. The thin, even strokes are crisp and the ink is solid black with no shading. The background is a plain pale grey, keeping the focus on the skin and the text.

The depot clock said twenty to two when the last bus of the night died in the yard, and I was still standing on the kerb with my A-Z open to a page I had long since memorised. Every street in the Cathedral Quarter had been dug up for the new tram lines, so the map was no use, and my phone had settled into its usual sulk at ten per cent.

I cut through the market where the shutters were down and the gulls were fighting over a split bag of chips. A man sleeping in a doorway lifted one hand and pointed left, then right, then left again, as if the city had given him directions it could not keep. I laughed out loud, which startled a fox off the bins, and decided to stop trying to get anywhere in particular.

For an hour I walked the back lanes with no plan. I read the names painted on the bricks and counted the windows gone blue with rain. In a stairwell lit by one bare bulb, someone had written a line in black marker across the tiles, the letters loose and careful, as though the writer had been lost once and had come out the other side to tell it. I copied it onto the back of a bus ticket and put the ticket in my coat.

At dawn I reached the river and found my own street waiting on the far bank, exactly where it had always been. I did not go home straight away. I sat on the wall with the ticket in my lap while the first tram came rattling over the bridge, and for once I did not mind how long the way round had taken.
