The snow came over the high pass on the third day of the Feast of Candles, and by dusk the road below Hollin Gap had vanished under it. Mara Dunnock kept the inn at the top of the gap with her two sons and a dog called Pell. She kept a lamp burning in the north window every night of winter, because her grandmother had told her a lamp was the only honest map a traveller could trust.

A carter came up on the fourth night, white to the eyebrows, and asked why she bothered. He had walked the same mule track for thirty years, he said, and had never once been lost. Mara poured him broth and said nothing. In the morning he was gone before the bread was out, and she found his tracks heading not down the valley but along the ridge, away from every road. His mother used to say not all who wander are lost, he had told her, but she never said which kind he was.

Spring came late that year. The carter came back at thaw, thin and laughing, with a satchel of seeds from country nobody on the gap had heard of. He sat by the hearth and told them he had gone looking for the place where the road ends, and had found it, and had turned around because the view was better from the inn. Mara asked him whether he was lost. He said he had never been less lost in his life, which she thought the truest thing a man had said at her table all winter.

She hung the lamp back in the north window and left it lit until morning, though nobody else came up the pass that year. Her sons asked why she kept a light for a man who went where he pleased. She told them the lamp was never for the ones who lost their way. It was for the ones who knew exactly where they were and simply wanted a window to come home to.
