Script quote tattoo across the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black cursive quote tattooed across the side of a person's ribcage, with the lines rising slightly from left to right. The linework is crisp and even, with solid black ink and no shading, and the skin tone is warm against the dark ink. A black lace bra sits along the top edge of the frame, and the background is a soft, blurred teal.

Your letter came on Tuesday folded inside the Harwich paper, and Mrs Pring read the whole of it aloud over the counter before I could get my apron off. She says you write like a man who has been out in the wind too long. I told her you have always written like that, and she laughed and said that was what she meant.
The lamp at Scarrow Point went out twice in the last gale. I climbed the tower both times with the oil can in one hand and the spare candle in the other, swearing at the wick the way you taught me. Father would have sent me back down the stairs. Instead I stood at the gallery rail in the rain and looked for your ship, which I knew was nowhere near, and I thought about the words you made me copy out for you before you sailed, the ones you said you would carry where the ink could not wash off.
The men at the Anchor have started calling me the keeper, as if I were the one who decides when the light comes on. I let them. Tell your crew that I know what the sea takes, and that I am not foolish enough to think it will give anything back for asking. I only know what I would say if the cliffs were the last thing between you and home.
I love you with all the madness in my soul, and you may call that the keeper's daughter being soft if you like. The wick is trimmed and the oil is full. Come home before the herring run.
