Compass rose on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small compass rose sits on the inner wrist, drawn in black ink with a dotted outer ring and a fine-lined eight-point star. The linework is thin and mostly solid black with light grey shading in the points. The pale skin and soft green background keep the focus on the tattoo, which is shown with the hand held in a loose fist.

Put your hand flat on the bench, boy, and stop fiddling with that rope, because I'll not tell this twice. Your great-uncle Tom had a star inked on the inside of his wrist the summer the Mary Jane went missing off Gull Point. For thirty years he kept it hidden under his cuff, and the only time he ever rolled the sleeve up was to show the harbour lads.

That February the fog came down so thick you couldn't see the bow from the wheelhouse. The binnacle needle had gone sluggish, the way they do when the cold gets into the iron, and the crew were all shouting different bearings at him. Tom pulled back his sleeve, tipped his wrist to the lamp, and read north off that little eight-pointed star with its dotted ring, as if it were a chart pinned up in front of him. He steered by the fine black line of the north point and counted the tide marks round the outer circle, and he brought them past the Bitter Rocks with the sea breaking white on either side.
Nobody aboard thought the ink had saved them, except Tom. Nobody argued with him either, because he was the only one of them who never once looked lost.
See the chart rose on the wall above the door, the one with the paint flaking off it? Your uncle Ned painted that the year after. He always said a rose is only honest when it's drawn where a man can reach for it.
