Quote lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a forearm with three lines of text: Make it happen in black handwritten script, a row of small dots, and PERIOD in black capital letters. The linework is clean and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The forearm is in the centre of the frame against a soft, blurred street background, and the wearer's floral skirt in warm reds, yellows and greens fills the right side.

Brother Wystan had been ruling the same margin for an hour when the abbot's letter arrived from Ely, four sheets long and without a single full stop. Abbot Osric wrote the way he preached, so that a sentence began in the spring and wandered on through harvest, past the bees and the price of wool, until it ran out of parchment rather than breath. Wystan read it twice by the east window, where the light was best, and felt the old ache in his wrist that meant he would be asked to copy it fair.

Make it happen, the abbot had written at the very end, as though he had invented the words. Wystan had heard him say it at every chapter meeting since Lent, usually while someone else was doing the work. He dipped his pen and reached for the red ink kept for capitals, thinking of the cellarer's ledger, which had waited nine months for a sum that would not add up. He changed not one word of the abbot's. He only went back to the first line and began to cut the sentences apart.
Each stop cost him a little courage. He set a dot where the abbot had written and then, and another where he had written as well as, and by the bell for Sext he had broken the letter into forty-one short statements, each standing on its own legs. The last line he wrote in the largest letters the scriptorium possessed, PERIOD, underlined twice, so that no reader in the chapter house could mistake it.
When the abbot came down that evening he found the letter folded on his desk with a single line beneath it in Wystan's plain hand: Make it happen. The abbot read the capitals for a long moment, then sat down heavily on the stool and laughed until he had to wipe his eyes with his sleeve.
