Script quote on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop shows a woman's upper legs as she holds the hem of a floral skirt. A thin black script line of text runs diagonally along the outer thigh. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the plain background of brick wall is softly out of focus.

All season the big wheel has squealed in the same rhythm while you painted every board in the field: the strongman's weight, the bearded lady's price, the goldfish nobody ever wins. Nobody asked you to write anything for the girl who sells tickets at the coconut shy. Still, you bought a fine-tipped sable from the chandler in town and spent three evenings under a lamp, practising a looping line of script until your wrist ached.

She leaned over the counter one afternoon and asked what you were drawing. You said it was nothing. She read it upside down anyway, moved her lips over the words, and laughed at the word beauty as though it were a joke you had both agreed to tell.

The fair packed up on the Sunday. Behind the tombola you found a chalk slate with the same sentence scrawled across it in your clumsy hand, rubbed half away by somebody's sleeve. You left it where it lay and climbed into the lorry. Somewhere on the motorway north, the wheel was still turning in your head.
