A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been painting the same sign for three days, the one outside the Coyote Rest on the stretch of Route 6 where nothing grows but creosote, and the owner keeps asking for it to be warmer. Your brushes are stiff with the grit that blows in off the flats. Each evening you sit on the tailgate with a jar of tea gone cold and watch the trucks come up out of the heat shimmer, every driver stopping for water because the next town is ninety miles off.

Dessie, who drives a fuel tanker and has never once stopped at the Rest in forty years, pulls in on the third afternoon. He asks what you're writing. You tell him it's a line a stranger left you, and he laughs, then goes quiet. The woman in the blue hatchback had filled up at the pump that morning, bought two bottles of water, and asked you to paint those words on something that would outlast her car. She didn't say why. She just tapped the letters on the glass of the cab, as if she were checking they were real.

Dessie tells you she had a look, he says, like someone who'd finally decided to stop listening to the road. He hadn't told his own story to anyone in a long while. So you paint it again in the flat light of the last hour, the loops on the y a little too big, the way the hand on the glass had drawn them. When the owner comes out to see, you let him admire the warmth. Then you climb down, and Dessie is already rolling, one arm out the window, waving at the empty road ahead.
