The ewes have started lambing early, and the wind off the fen has taken the lid off the water trough again. You find your uncle's pencil stub in the pocket of the coat he left on the hook, and under it a folded page torn from the feed merchant's diary, his handwriting leaning as it always did, as if it were walking into weather.

The page is a list. Bale twine, two gallons of diesel, the name of a Hereford bull he meant to look at in spring. At the bottom, pressed so hard the lead has shone through, he has written: we're all stories in the end. You read it twice by the stove, then a third time, because you knew him well enough to know he never wrote anything idle.
Outside, the lamp in the lambing shed flickers. You pull on his wellingtons, too big in the toe, and walk the frozen track to the far barn where he kept the old ledgers, the ones going back to his father's time. Every season has a name written beside it: a dog, a storm, a bad winter, a calf that lived. You turn pages until your fingers ache, looking for the one with your name in it.
It is not there. Instead, on the inside cover of the last ledger, in the same slanting hand, is a blank line and a date three weeks ahead. Beneath it he has written: your turn to write the next one. You tuck the pencil behind your ear and carry the ledger back through the snow toward the light.
