Mared left Carrow Hollow in the spring the wells went bitter, with a satchel, two boots that did not match, and her grandmother's rule said over until it wore smooth: go as far as the map runs out, but mind the road that brought you. The motorway ran west as straight as a ruled line, its grey lanes split by roots and overrun with thistle. She walked it for nineteen days. On the twelfth she met Osk, a salt-trader with a mule that had one ear, who shared his fire and asked her where she thought she was going. She told him about the sea. He laughed without unkindness and said the sea had pulled back years since, and what was left lay in puddles the colour of rust, too bitter even for the mule.
She went on anyway, because she had come too far to turn round for a laugh. At the cliff edge she found only a long flat basin of crust and gulls, and she sat on a slab of broken concrete and wept for the first time since her mother died, though nobody was there to see it.
When she finally stood, she turned to look back the way she had come. From the top of the cliff she could see the road running all the way home, a pale thread laid across the plain. On the third ridge, at the exact place where the Hollow first showed through the haze, a single lamp was burning in a window. Her grandmother had never once let it go out.
