Quote tattoo in typewriter font on lower back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a lower back with a black ink quote set in two lines of typewriter-style lettering, reading she slept with wolves without fear, for the wolves knew a lion was among them. The letters are crisp, with solid black fills and slightly uneven edges in the serif strokes, and the text follows the natural curve of the back. The black top above and the pale skin around the text keep the focus on the lettering.

The lion came ashore with the crates from the wrecked Merrow, and by the third night Iona had stopped pretending the thing moaning on the shingle was only the wind. Her uncle wanted the rifle brought down from the rafters. The island's dogs, the grey half-wild pack that lived in the peat hags above the village, wanted nothing at all, and that unsettled her most.

She sat at her grandfather's Olympia typewriter that evening with the lamp turned low, because the keys were the only thing on Scarrow that never asked her what she meant to do. The e stuck and the l jumped, so every line came out with a small stagger, as though the words were walking home drunk. She typed a sentence she half remembered from a library book in Oban, then typed it again, correcting nothing, because her grandfather had always said a mistake typed was a mistake owned.

On the fourth morning she carried a bowl of mutton fat up to the peat hags and found the dogs bedded down in a hollow with the lion stretched between them like a fallen gate. Its ribs rose and fell. The eldest dog lifted its muzzle at her, unbothered, then lay back down against the animal's flank. Iona understood then that the pack had never been afraid of the lion. They had only been afraid of being the largest thing that didn't belong.

She pinned the page to the byre door on her way back down, the two uneven lines facing the sea.
