Quote tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a two-line handwritten script quote on the inner forearm, reading The sun will rise and we will try again. Below the text sits a solid black symbol made of a horizontal bar, three short vertical strokes and a looped end. The ink is uniformly black on light skin, with the lettering set against a dark background and a slightly warm colour cast.

Gather in under the awning, all of you, the rain isn't going to pack up for your convenience. Sit on the crate, Tommy, that one's dry. Now, do you want the story of the key, or will you stand there dripping at the bread stall?

Years back, Ada Brennan kept a bolted cart at the far end of the Saturday market, and the padlock on it had lost its key in the flood. Every dawn she rattled that bolt and said the same thing to the gulls: the sun will rise and we will try again. The other traders laughed at her. Then the frost killed the marrows, the fishmonger's wife left for Carlisle, and the market shrank to six stalls and a dog.
Ada wouldn't sell up. She took the hinge apart with a cold chisel, filed a key from a bent tent peg, cut three notches for the three hard winters, and bent a loop of copper wire for a handle. It turned first time, which was more than anything else had done that year. Inside the cart there was no gold, only a ledger of every customer who had ever owed her a loaf, and a note in her own hand.
The note said nothing about money. It said: come back tomorrow. That's the whole of it. The rain's easing now, so off you go, and somebody owes me a penny for the sitting.
