Sun, moon and script quote on the side ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the words the sun will soon rise above the shadow in cursive script, set over three lines, with a black sun above the text and a small crescent moon below. The linework is bold and solid with minimal shading. The photograph is black and white and shows the tattoo on the side of a torso, with the text running diagonally across the skin.

Dear Marguerite, the tide tables are pinned to the back of the kitchen door where you left them, and I have not moved them, though the ink has run in the damp. The boat is still on the slip below the harbour wall. Your brother says I should sell her before the winter storms take the planking, but I keep walking down there at dusk to sit in her bow and watch the lamp go on at the lighthouse.

You asked me in your last letter whether I still believe the words you chalked on the sea wall the night before you left for Bristol. I do. I have believed them every morning since, which is more than I can say for the kettle, the post, or the vicar. The sun will soon rise above the shadow. I read it aloud to the gulls on Tuesday and one of them, a fat old thing with a torn wing, stayed on the rail and looked at me as if it had been waiting for the line.
The moon came up early last night, thin as a fingernail, and I thought of how small it looks when it is only a crescent, as if it has been cut back to make room for something. I hope the city is treating you kindly. Write to me when the days lengthen. I will be here, mending the nets badly and waiting for the light to come round the headland the way it always does.
