Quote tattoo on a thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a short quotation set in five stacked lines of black typewriter-style lettering: she believed she could so she did. It sits on the outer thigh of a woman whose dark top is held up beside it, and only her hands, the thigh and a turquoise ring are visible. The ink is solid black with clean, even edges against pale skin on a plain light background.

Maureen Dunn had kept the typewriter under her bed for eleven years, wrapped in a bath towel, because nobody sent her letters that needed answering any more. Her grandson Kieran came round on the Saturday with a ribbon he'd found at the charity shop on Coley Road. He fitted it at her kitchen table with a butter knife and more patience than she had given him credit for. 'Go on, Nan, test it,' he said, and went to put the kettle on.

The carriage jammed on the fourth line. She typed the same words five times before the bell stopped rattling and the keys came down hard and black, each letter standing up straight on the page as if it had been waiting to be asked. When she pulled the sheet from the roller she read it out loud to the empty flat, and her voice did something she didn't expect.

On Monday she pinned it to the noticeboard in the community centre, under a flyer for sewing lessons and a lost cat. Then she took the stairs down, all fourteen floors, counting each one.
