Typewriter quote lettering on the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink quote set in a serif typewriter-style font, arranged in a stacked block of short lines down the side of the torso. The lettering is solid black with clean, even edges and sits against lightly tanned skin. A black lace bralette and grey fabric frame the tattoo on a plain, muted background.

The officer at Dover wants the case open before you have finished your tea. He lifts the Olympia out in both hands, as if it might wake, turns it under the strip light and asks what it is for. You say letters. He asks to whom. You tell him the truth, that there is nobody left to write to, and he looks at you over his glasses for a long moment before he puts the machine back in its case and waves the next car forward.

The man who sold it to you in Lyon swore it had typed a whole novel in a rented room in 1961, and that the e would stick only when the writer was lying. You have never found out whether that was true. The e has stuck since Calais. Under the carriage, wedged against the roller, is a strip of paper with the words typed in stacked lines, SHE, BELIEVED, SHE COULD, SO SHE DID, the capitals gone soft at the edges where someone pressed too hard and then stopped.

In the car park on the far side of the barrier you sit with the window down and feed a clean sheet into the platen. The rain has started again. You type slowly, one key at a time, and when you reach the last line the e catches, a fraction late, the way it always does, and you let it finish the word.
