Typewriter quote tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a stacked line of text in a typewriter-style serif font, reading she believed she could so she did, with each phrase on its own line. It is rendered in solid black ink with crisp, even edges and no visible shading. The subject is photographed from the side, with a black lace bra strap and a dark loose top framing the lettering against pale skin.

At the reunion in the old Gallow Lane hall, the caretaker's grandson found the Olympia in a tea chest under the stage. Nobody had struck a key on it since the Coronation. He blew the dust off the platen, fed in a sheet of carbon paper and pressed the first key he touched, and the machine answered with five short lines before anyone could stop it.

Ruth Venn read the paper twice, standing by the trestle tables. She had come only because her sister had made her, and she had sat at the back of Miss Harrow's class for six years without once putting her hand up. Miss Harrow kept a list on the wall of every word her pupils got right, and the list had always been short. Ruth's name was on it for one thing only, a spelling of believed that nobody else had managed.
The village told it differently afterwards. Some said the typewriter only ever typed what a person already meant to do, and that Ruth had been meaning to leave the town since she was nine. Others said it was the carbon paper. Ruth said nothing about it. She folded the sheet into her coat, walked out past the squash bottles and the coats on the hooks, and caught the last bus to the station to buy a ticket for Leeds.
A postcard came to the hall two weeks later, no stamp, addressed to Miss Harrow. It showed a tram depot on the front. On the back, in capitals a little uneven, were the last words from the wall list: SO SHE DID.
