Typewriter quote along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the side of the ribcage, with the words she believed she could so she did. set in five stacked lines of typewriter-style lettering. The text is crisp, evenly spaced and solid black with no shading, and the skin tone is light and even. The composition is cropped to the torso, with a dark garment and black lace top framing the tattoo and a bare arm at the right edge.

The Remington had lost its e in the winter, so every page Sister Agnes sent down to the cellar came out with a small pale gap where the letter should have been. Brother Tobias said we could fix them with a pen. I said the gaps were the only honest thing in the building.

I had come up from Leeds in the spring with a suitcase and a letter from the bishop's secretary, who wrote that the community at Kirkmere needed someone who could type without looking. I could. I typed the accounts, the flour lists, and long letters to a printer in Bath who never answered the same month twice. Mostly I worked in the cold room under the chapter house, where one high window laid its light across the keys like frost.
In June the prior asked me to set a card for the window of the guest house, something plain to cheer the travellers. I typed the words she believed she could so she did in five stacked lines on good cream stock, and the last time I let the hammer strike the full stop hard enough to dent the paper. He read it, grunted, and said it was too cheerful for a monastery. I told him that was rather the point. He pinned it up anyway.
The card is still there, I am told, though the guest house has changed hands twice. Nobody remembers who set it. What they remember is that full stop, which a novice once traced with his thumb and said looked like a small stone someone had decided to keep.
