Quote tattoo on the thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a line of black serif lettering tattooed on the outer thigh, reading "but without the dark, we'd never see the stars." The letters are solid black ink with clean edges, set in two lines that slope slightly across the skin. The wearer's grey sweater sleeve and black clothing frame the tattoo, with a hand and rings visible at the edge of the shot.

You had been driving since the afternoon, and by the time the windscreen cracked at the lip of the dry wash, the last petrol station on the Ardath road had already shut its shutters behind you. You coasted onto the verge with the engine ticking like a clock that had lost its hour. Nothing moved out there except the heat coming off the tarmac in long, lazy ribbons, and then nothing moved at all.

The old man who ran the roadhouse at Ardath had told you once that the desert keeps its sky for people who stop. He had a saying chalked above his till, half rubbed away by sand, and you had laughed at it the way you laugh at anything painted on a wall. Now you sat with your knees against the steering wheel and tried to remember the rest of his words, something about lamps and the men who drove by them.
At nine the recovery truck still had not come, and the dashboard lights went out one by one until you reached over and switched off the headlights to save the battery. The road vanished. For a minute there was only a faint, dusty hush and your own breathing. Then the sky came up through the crack in the glass like a spill of salt, thousands of points you had never once noticed from the city, and you understood the old man had meant the dark was the part doing the work.
You wrote the line on the back of a fuel receipt with the pen from the glovebox, the letters sloping because the car leaned against the ditch. When the truck finally came, its amber beam swung across the scrub and you did not lift your head to watch it. You folded the receipt into your pocket and kept it there, the way you would keep a map to a place you meant to return to.
