A photograph of a single line of black serif lettering tattooed on skin, reading "I'm the hero of this story." The letters are crisp and solid with even, dense black ink and no shading. The warm, slightly sepia photo is framed close, with the grey fabric of a top filling the lower half of the frame.

Dear Marnie, you will say I have finally lost it, sitting up at a quarter past three with the radiator ticking and a bottle of supermarket prosecco going flat beside me. Tonight the hero caught the last 23 from Digbeth in his good coat over his pyjama top, because the chip shop on Coventry Street was shut and the only light left was the launderette, where a woman folded a fitted sheet with the patience of a saint. Nobody gave him a quest. A lad by the bins asked for a light, and I handed over my lighter, which I do not even smoke, and he called me mate as though I had talked him down off a roof.

Here is the trouble. Heroes, I have found, mostly spend their time being wrong in the right direction. I walked the canal path to the lock at two, rehearsing a speech for Dad about the job I turned down, and halfway along I realised it was the same speech I gave him in 2011. A heron stood in the shallows the whole time. It did not care in the slightest, which was restful.

So I am writing this on the back of a takeaway menu, because it is the only paper in the flat. Tomorrow I will ring Dad before he has his tea. That is the quest. My phone is face down on the windowsill, which is where the hero keeps his sword. Love, Callum.
