The tattoo is the phrase I'm the hero of this story in a bold serif typeface, running diagonally across the side of the torso. The ink is solid black with crisp edges and some softening from the skin's natural texture. The warm-toned photograph is taken close up, with grey fabric along the bottom edge framing the skin.

Somebody's been at this, she said. Inside the front board, in blue biro, someone had written I'm the hero of this story, then struck through the word hero so hard the nib had torn the page, and above it, in capitals, had added NOT. I said the previous owner was probably a teenager. She said teenagers were the only honest annotators left, and paid a pound for it without haggling.

After she had gone I stayed behind to pack up. The rain had settled into a steady grievance on the awning, and the gutters along Carrow Street were running like the city had sprung a leak. Out of habit I checked the last page, the way you check a pocket for keys. Under the printed words The End, somebody had pencilled a small question: Who told you that?

I had no answer for it, and there was no biro in my apron. So I took the nearest paperback from the crate, a damp Trollope nobody had wanted since spring, and wrote on its flyleaf in my own careful hand: Still deciding. Then I set it back on the table, face up, where the rain could get at it.
