Black fine line script quote with a ship wheel and anchor tattooed on the side of a person's ribs.

Quote with ship wheel and anchor on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote reads Be the one to guide me, but never hold me down, set across three lines on the side of the ribs. A small ship's wheel sits to the left and an anchor to the right, both drawn in clean black linework with light shading. The skin is pale and the photo is taken at close range against a black top and a bathroom background, with the ink as the clear focal point.

Nell, the bread came out flat again this morning, and Dougie from the wheelhouse says it's the sea air in the flour, which is rubbish, because I've kept the tin shut since Tuesday. I've pinned your drawing above the range, the one with the little wheel and the anchor and your wobbly gulls. Mum says you've been sulking because I wouldn't take you on the Tuesday run. You're twelve. The Tuesday run is no place for a girl with a sharp tongue and sticky fingers, and I'm not having that argument over the radio again.

The skipper, Mr Aird, has a saying that the wheel steers the ship but the anchor is what keeps her honest. I thought it was daft until the swell came up off Peterhead last month and the stern swung round like a gate in a gale. We lost a crate of onions and nearly a lad over the side, and I stood at the galley hatch with both hands on the rail, thinking about your face when you were little and wouldn't let go of my thumb in the queue for the ferry.

What I've worked out since is that a wheel is no use if you never let it turn, and an anchor is only for harbour, not for living. So I've decided. At half term you'll come up on the bus, and I'll teach you to knead properly, and Dougie says he'll let you spin the little tender's wheel in the sheltered bit by the breakwater, with a life jacket on and me shouting from the quay. I'm not keeping you tied to anything. Come and see the lights come on over the harbour, love, and tell me which way you want to go.
