Flash design of a white rabbit sitting on a cream ribbon banner, framed by pink roses and teal leaves, in a neo-traditional style with no body placement shown.

Rabbit and ribbon with roses

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A white rabbit sits on top of a cream ribbon banner that wraps around a central stem, with the words Death, Always and Love written across it. Pink and peach roses and teal leaves surround the ribbon, with small dotted accents scattered through the foliage. The bold outlines and flat colour fills are set against a solid black background, with the design centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the end of August the windfalls under the Cox trees have gone soft and sweet, and the white rabbit comes down the third row every evening as if it has an appointment with you. You have stopped shooing it. Your uncle says it was here before the orchard was planted, that it belonged to the old vicar, and that rabbits who outlive their owners get stubborn about it.

The ribbon is the trouble. Last week you found a length of cream satin snagged on the wall roses, the kind that came off the bolt in the church jumble tin, and someone had inked three words along it in brown ink: Death, Always, Love. Nobody in the village will own to writing it. Mrs Pargeter swears it was there when the frost took the first pears, tied round the stem of the Albertine like a bow on a gift nobody opened.

On Saturday you follow the rabbit past the ladders and the wasps and the cider press to the wall where the pink roses have run wild. It sits up on the lowest stone, nose twitching, and waits. You cut the ribbon free, and the wind takes one end and rolls it over the wall into the bramble. The rabbit goes after it without looking back.

You tie the bow on the gate that evening. Your uncle reads the words twice and says nothing, and then says that love is the only one of the three that has ever been any use to a gardener, because the other two come anyway. You leave the ribbon knotted on the gate for the rabbit to find.
