...and that is why you never take the hill path after the bell, for the hare is up there with his mortar, and he does not care for visitors who stare at the moon too long. Sit nearer the fire, Tomas. The ash is the only warm thing left on this side of the wood.

Long ago, when the moon was still a bare white bowl with no clouds to hold, a hare named Ouka lived at the edge of Velen Wood, where the last cottages gave way to bracken. She was not clever the way the foxes were clever. She was patient. Each evening she carried wet clay from the stream in her mouth, rolled it between her paws, and sat on the stone wall above the orchard, pounding it into small pale pellets she said would one day mend the moon's broken rim.

The villagers laughed. Old Hedda who kept the mill said a hare had no business with heaven, and her grandson threw stones at the wall. Ouka kept working. When the autumn frosts came she dusted her pellets with silver rime from the well cover, and the cold cracked her paws, and still she did not stop.

One night the moon shrank to a thin curl above the hill, and the wood went so dark that the children could not find their own doors. Ouka climbed the wall for the last time and pressed her pellets upward, and clouds rose from the valley like wet wool to catch them. The crescent filled out, slow as bread rising, and in the morning Hedda found one pale pellet lying in her apple tub, cool as a stone from the stream. So when the moon thins out, child, look for a small shape sitting on its edge, working still.
