Yin and yang cats on a shoulder
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A circular tattoo shows a black cat and a pale cat interlocking in a yin yang arrangement, with the light half left as bare skin. The black cat has a solid silhouette with a curled tail, while the light cat is defined by black whisker lines and a small black outline. Only black ink is used, and the design sits neatly within the circle on the upper shoulder against a dark background.

The black cat had claimed the stove end of the Patience before the paint on the cabin doors was dry, and the pale one had never once let him keep it. Nell Hardcastle filled two bowls twice a day, and twice a day she found the pair of them nose to nose on the coal bunker lid, neither willing to be the first to step off.

They worked the locks with her on the Leeds stretch that autumn. Mab rode the bow and watched the water for kingfishers, while Soot stayed at the tiller and sulked whenever the mooring lines went slack. At Armley lock a lad with a fishing rod asked whether they were brother and sister. Nell told him they were the same animal cut in half, and that they had not yet noticed.
The winter the canal froze, the matter was settled for them. Nell lit the range and dropped the cushion on the floor, and by morning the two had curled into one round shape, black flank tucked against white belly, tails meeting where the circle closed. She did not move them. She sat with her tea going cold and watched the frost ferns creep across the window glass until the cabin was a small lit room inside a white world.
In March the ice gave way, and so did Soot's sulk. At the next lock he stepped onto the towpath first, as ever, but Mab followed a length behind. When the gates were full and the boat had to wait for the water to level, the two of them sat either side of the balance beam, one black and one pale, watching the level rise between them until the gates could finally open.
