A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marguerite Vance had kept the lamp at Scarrow Head for thirty-one years, and in all that time no bird had tried to land on the gallery rail in a gale. This one did. It was a small grey dove, soaked flat along its ribs, with a sprig of olive pinched in its beak as though someone had asked it to carry a message and it had refused to put it down.

She carried it inside, dried it with a flannel beside the paraffin stove and set it on the chart table, where it sat among the tide tables without fuss. The olive was still green, though the wind had stripped everything else on the headland bare. Tom had planted the tree by the boathouse the spring before the Mary Ellen went down, and she had long since stopped expecting anything from it.

By dawn the sea had dropped to a grumble. She opened the door, and the dove stepped onto the threshold, shook out its wings and rose above the cliff path in one sharp, tapered line, the sprig still in its beak. It did not turn toward the mainland. It bore out over the water, toward the wreck, and she watched until it was a mark no bigger than a comma.

Marguerite went back to the logbook and wrote the weather down as she always did, then added a line beneath the entry for the light: Olive carried out to the Mary Ellen. Before she closed the book she pressed one stray leaf between the pages, where it would keep, and went up to trim the wick.
