Rabbits with balloons on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm shows a design of two grey rabbits, one holding a pink balloon and the other a blue balloon, rising towards the upper left of the arm. The outlines are soft and the shading is light, with the balloons in gentle pastel pink and blue. A cream plush rabbit and a red lace top sit in the background, and the design is set in the centre-left of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mist had come down over Scarrow Head so thick that the lamp could not be seen from the boats, and Old Mab sent the two hares up the cliff stair with the balloons. The balloons had been saved from the chandler's birthday stock, pink for the girl and blue for the boy, and nobody on the headland had ever known a hare to carry anything but its own bad temper. Pell took the pink string in his teeth. Ottoline took the blue, and they went up the steps two by two with their ears laid flat against the wind.

The stair was slick with spray and the balloons pulled like hungry dogs. Halfway up, the pink one tried to go out over the sea to see the fish, and Pell had to hang from the rail by his back feet until it came back to him. Ottoline's blue balloon wanted the moon, which was only a smudge behind the cloud, and she told it plainly that the moon was no place for a balloon. At the top, in the lamp room, Mab's husband was cursing the wet wick. The hares tied their strings to the iron rail and let the balloons rise above the lantern, pink and blue against the grey.

The Marigold came in at first light, following the colour. Skipper Hal Brannock said afterwards that he had steered between a pink float and a blue one as if they had been painted on the water, and he brought his boat through the channel without a scrape. The balloons drifted off east by noon and were never found.

Each spring, when the mist returns, two grey hares are still seen climbing the stair, and on the iron rail of the lamp room there is a tuft of fur that the keepers have never been able to clear away.
