Dotted bow tattoo on the wrist
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small bow outline is tattooed on the wrist, formed entirely from black dots of even spacing. The dotwork is crisp and sits against lightly tanned skin. The hand rests against a white textured top on a pale background, with a gold filigree ring on the index finger as the main colour contrast.

The fair leaves the field before dawn, and you are the one who has to fold the ribbon stall into the back of the lorry while the others sleep. Your aunt Marisol taught you to prick patterns the old way: a sheet of card laid over the drawing, a pin held upright, and one dot after another punched through so the chalk could dust the outline onto cloth. She said a good pattern breathes if the dots are even, and that a bow was the hardest thing to get right, because it has to look as though it might untie itself at any moment.

On the last night in Hereford, a boy from the dodgems asks you to tie his sister's hair for the parade. You use a scarlet ribbon. She holds perfectly still while you loop and pull, and when you are done the bow sits crooked on her crown. You tell her it is meant to be like that. Her brother laughs and calls you a liar, and you are, a little, because you have spent the whole week practising the loops on the corner of the order book until your fingers stopped shaking.
The next morning the fair rolls out past the cattle market and the ferris wheel folds down like a closing fan. You sit on the tailgate with the card pattern across your knees, counting the pinpricks. There are forty-one dots in the bow and not one of them is out of line. Somewhere behind you the girl with the crooked bow is waving at the road, and you wave back, though she cannot possibly see you through the dust.
