Mr Pell had pinned the string to the same nail for thirty-one years, and every morning Ada watched him wind the loose end around his thumb as though the sea might change its mind if he hurried. The chart on the wall of the coastguard hut at Scarrow Head was drawn in fountain pen on squared paper. Nine lines ran out from a single brass tack, each one a bearing taken from the headland, each one ticked where a boat had been seen crossing it, the little crosses bunched like cattle at a gate.

"You don't draw what you hope for," Pell said. "You draw where they were."
The two small rings in the corner were the lamps at Kittle Rock, lit in pairs so a skipper could tell them apart from the town. Since the spring they had been dark on the chart and bright in the log, and nobody in Scarrow would say why. Ada found the old lamp-keeper's cards in a biscuit tin under the stove, each one signed, each one with a single cross beside a date.
She laid the ruler along the newest bearing. It ran past the headland and the shoal and stopped at the edge of the paper, where Pell had written in his neat hand, Keep looking. On the last morning of the month the fog lifted early, and there, exactly on the ninth line, a small boat came round the point with both lamps lit.
