Rain cloud over a teacup
Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bold black outline shows a cloud at the top releasing raindrops into a teacup decorated with flowers and leaves. The cloud and the tea inside the cup are shaded with fine stippled dots, while the cup's pattern is mostly solid black line work. The image is a close, straight-on photo of the design on skin, in black and grey only.

By the time the reservoir domes went dry, the women of Ashcombe had learned to keep their weather in crockery. Ruth Ewbank carried the blue-rimmed cup up the terraces at dawn, its saucer balanced on her palm, and set it on the wall where the old cloud-catcher still hummed. Nobody spoke while she waited. A grey lip formed above the rim, tightened, and let fall a single drop into the tea below.

The leaves were the trouble. Her son Tobias had grown them from seed in the kiln house, pinching the stems so the veins ran black as pen-work, and the flowers he had painted along the bowl were the only colour left in the village that did not belong to rust. He had gone east with the salvage convoy in the spring and not come back, and the cup had come home with a crack in its handle that she mended with copper wire.
Ruth tipped the tea out into the trough below the wall, slowly, so that every drop of the morning fell onto the stone. The rain came after, in fits, pattering on the slate roofs and the dust, and the children ran out bare-armed into it, shrieking as though they had never seen the sky do anything at all. She stood at the wall until her saucer was wet through.
Later she found the cup empty on the sill, its pattern beaded with water, and beneath the flowers someone had left a second little cloud in damp fingerprints. Ruth took the wire from her apron pocket and mended the handle again, though it did not need it, for no reason she could have given the council.
