Camping scene with tent and campfire
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a tent beside a campfire with curling smoke, set among tall pine trees beneath a crescent moon inside a rounded black silhouette. The linework is bold and dark with solid black areas for the trees and sky, and soft grey shading on the tent and ground. The composition is a centred vignette, with the tent on the left and the fire on the right.

He wanted to know if the vending machine on the ground floor still took old pound coins, and I told him it did, which was a lie, but a kind one.

Dad and I used to drive up to the forest on the first Friday of every August, and he always built the fire too big. He would sit with his palms out toward it as if he were apologising to it. Mum said the trees were the only thing that ever made him quiet, and I think she was right, because the pines went up black against whatever sky was left, and the smoke curled off the top of the fire as though it had somewhere better to be.
By half four the ward had gone soft and grey, the way it does before the day staff arrive with their car keys and their bad news. I stood at the window at the end of the corridor and looked down at the multistorey car park, where a thin cut of moon hung over the roof. Mr Hallam had asked me once what the nights were like on the other side of the glass. I had said they were long and quiet, and that you learned to keep one eye on the work and one on the sky.
