Teacup and rain cloud tattoo
Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A teacup sits beneath a stippled cloud, with raindrops falling from it onto the top of the cup. The cup is decorated with two flowers and a trail of leaves, drawn with bold outlines and solid black fill. The tattoo is shown in black ink and grey dotwork shading, filling most of the frame on a limb.

Tuesday, and the cloud is back over the counter again, the little grey one that has never once rained on the pavement. It sits above the big brown pot in the window and drips straight into it, as neat as a tap. Nobody believes me. Mr Pell from the bakery came in this morning with his umbrella furled, looked up at the ceiling, and asked whether the roof had gone.

I have tried everything. I moved the pot to the back room, and the cloud followed it, bumping along under the beams like an unwanted lodger. I bought a sieve, a bucket, a kettle with a lid that fits. I asked the vicar. He said the cloud was clearly fond of the tea and I should let it be, which is the sort of advice you get from a man who takes his with three sugars and no milk.
Then yesterday a girl came in from the caravan park with wet hair and a face like a cracked saucer. She asked for the strongest tea I had. I poured it from the pot under the cloud, and the drops hit the surface in rings, and she watched them and said her grandmother used to do the same thing with a pan on the stove when the sky was too low for washing. She drank the whole cup. The cloud went thin and pale over her head, and by the time she left it had shrunk to a wisp no bigger than a handkerchief.
I don't understand it, and I've stopped trying. Tonight I've put the kettle on for two, just in case.
