Red heart with golden crescent on wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A black-outlined heart with red shading along its upper edges sits on pale skin, with a crescent or swirl shape inside it that is shaded from yellow to orange and brown. The linework is bold and even, and the colour blends softly within each shape. The tattoo is centred in a close, straight-on photo with the wrist crease visible below it.

The keeper's boat did not come back on the night of the big swell, so Mairi Grant climbed the tower and lit the lamp herself. Her father had taught her the order of things: wick, glass, brass, then the slow turn of the mantle that sent the beam sweeping across black water. Her hands shook through all of it. The light went out to sea regardless.

Three mornings later a gleam showed low on the rocks below the point, a curve of gold no bigger than a thumbnail. The village said it was a fisher's lantern drifting. Mairi knew better. It was the brass crescent her father hung on the lamp-room door, the one with a red glass heart set into its shutter so the family could find each other in fog. She took the cliff path with a coil of rope and a flask of tea.
The gold turned out to be a bell on a cord, fixed round the neck of the keeper's old collie, who sat in the shallows soaked to the ribs and would not leave it. Further out, the boat lay keel up on the skerry. Mairi waded to the dog and did not look at the boat for long. Then a voice came down from the cliff top, thin and cracked with salt, asking whether she had remembered to trim the wick.
She had. She had trimmed it three times that night, and every time she climbed back down to the dog and back up again, the red heart on the shutter kept turning over the water, showing the rocks to anyone still out there.
