Watercolour-style splash tattoo in blue, purple and pink with a white curved swirl motif on the inner wrist and lower forearm.

Watercolour splash with swirl on a wrist

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo on the inner wrist and lower forearm of a light-skinned arm against a dark background. The design is a white-outlined curved swirl sitting over soft blue, purple and pink splashes that spread out in loose, drip-like edges. The colour is applied in soft, blended washes, with the outline giving the central motif a clean edge.

The fiddler would not start the last reel until the lamps were lit, and that was the trouble, for the lamp-man Harker had gone home drunk on cider and taken the oil with him. So the parish hall sat in dusk, and the dancers stamped their boots and called for the tune.

Mary Pell, who kept the bakehouse and had never once danced, took a jar of blue dye from her apron pocket. She had been colouring the harvest banners all week. She tipped it onto the boards, then a jar of rose madder after it, and the floor drank the colour the way a wet cloth takes ink. Where the splashes landed they ran in slow drips toward the stove. The fiddler laughed, lifted his bow and played.

The couples went round and round, and the colours spun with them. Each turn the blue and the rose blurred into one another until the whole floor looked like a sky at evening. The skirts left a pale curl behind them on the boards, white as wool in the dark. Folk said the curl was the fiddler's breath made visible, and that it would stay there for ever.

Next morning Harker came to sweep and found only a faint swirl of pale wood where the dancers had turned. He tried to scrub it out. Mary told him to leave it, because the tune was still in there. He swept around it every morning after that, and the hall never needed a lamp lit for the last reel again.
