Pastel crystal heart on a lower leg

Geometric · Calf · Colour · Photo

A heart built from faceted, crystal-like shapes with bold black outlines. Each facet is shaded in pink, purple, green, yellow and blue, with small highlights that give a glassy, gem-like look. The heart sits centrally on a smooth, lightly lit limb against a pale textured background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the sea has gone glassy since Tuesday and Father says that means the herring will come back in from the Deep Bank, though he said the same thing last March and we ate boiled cabbage for a fortnight. I have taken the lamp oil down to Mrs Pollock at the harbour cottage and she gave me a jar of her rhubarb jam for you, which I have not told Mother about because she would only ask why I didn't bring it straight up the hill.

The real news is the crate that washed up under the slipway on Sunday. Dad hauled it out with the gaff and inside, packed in straw gone green with weed, were seven pieces of cut glass, each the size of a hen's egg and each one a different colour, pink and violet and a sort of mint green, with yellow in the middle like the inside of a lemon. Mr Ansty from the Co-op says they are bits of a ship's chandelier that went down off the Scillies, but I think they were meant for someone who was waiting. I have hidden two in my boot.

You remember the old story about the fisher-wife who wished for a heart she could carry anywhere? I think I may have found the pieces. If I set them right, the outline will hold them, black as tar, and the light will come through each facet and make the whole thing hum like the bell buoy in fog. Don't tell Father. He would only say I have been reading too many of Mrs Pollock's novels, and perhaps I have.

Write back soon. Bring your good scissors.

Love, Marnie
