Rainbow heart tree with swallows
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A tree with a thick brown trunk grows heart-shaped leaves in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, with hearts also scattered at its base. Four swallows in green, orange, blue and purple fly from its branches, with small dotted trails and a star accent. Bold black outlines define the shapes against soft, even skin tones.

This one was green at the wings, the colour of new bracken. It landed on the rim of the flour bin as if it had paid for the seat. Her grandmother used to say swallows carried news from one parish to the next, and that a bakery was the only place a swallow would stay long enough to deliver it.
The news was about the old ash behind St Mary's, struck by lightning the spring Hannah married. The tree had split down the middle, and the next year it grew back with hearts for leaves. Each heart was a different colour, because the village had been leaving its wishes at the roots for generations: a ribbon, a child's first tooth, a loaf wrapped in cloth. Red for love that had been lost, yellow for love still on its way, blue for those who wanted to leave and come home again.
Hannah scored a cross into the morning loaf, set it on the sill, and waited. By the time the sun touched the church roof, four swallows were stitching the square together with their dotted trails. The green one went last, and it carried a warm crust in its beak towards the hills, though nobody could say whose wish it had been carrying.
