Fairy and butterfly tree on chest and shoulder
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A seated fairy with blue butterfly wings rests on a bare branch at the left of the design. Branches spread up and across towards the shoulder, with blue butterflies scattered among them and a larger butterfly on the shoulder. The branches are rendered in grey and brown with soft shading, and the butterflies use blue ink with light and dark tones.

Dear Nell,

You will not believe what has been happening at the junction since the frost lifted. The old ash beside the goods shed, the one we all agreed was dead, has put out new wood along its lowest limb, and sitting on that limb is a fairy. I know how that sounds. I went out with my lamp at five, expecting to check the points, and there she was, knees drawn up, her blue wings folded behind her like a pair of wet tickets.
Nobody has tried to shift her. Alfie the porter says she has been there since the late Tuesday goods, and every time the 7.12 comes through the cutting, a handful of blue butterflies lifts off the branches and climbs over the platform towards the footbridge. Mrs Pryce from the tea stall counted them on Thursday. Forty-one, then sixty, then she lost count when the steam got in her eyes. The stationmaster says the timetable has never been kept so faithfully by anything.
Yesterday, when the signal dropped, the fairy lifted her head and looked along the line. The largest butterfly, the one that sits on the branch nearest the bridge, opened its wings slowly and went after the last train out of the station. It has not come back. Alfie swears it was waiting for someone. I think it was simply tired of waiting for the timetable to end.
Come up at Easter and bring the good tea. We can sit on the bench under the ash and see whether she still looks like someone listening for a train that is late.
Yours ever, Walter
