Rainbow loop choker design

Colour · Flash

The image shows a ring of overlapping looped lines in the style of a tattoo choker, drawn as a single continuous band. The linework is thin and loose, with each loop crossing the next, and the outline is slightly uneven. The ring is centred on a plain white background, with colour moving smoothly from green and yellow at the left to red, pink and purple at the right.

The choker had been on the bench since the 17:52 to Leeds, coiled like something that had given up on its own shape. Ruth picked it up with two fingers and turned it under the strip light of the lost property office. Forty-one years at Halifax station and she had never been handed a thing that looked so much like it had been made in a hurry by someone who meant it.

The loops ran in a ring from green through yellow to red and then purple, each one crossing the next so the band never quite closed and never quite came apart. She tried to count them and lost her place at thirty-one. Her tag book had a column for colour and another for condition. She wrote 'rainbow, cord, intact' and then crossed out intact, because a bit of the blue had come away at one join and she didn't want to lie in ink.

Dev from the buffet came in at six with a paper cup of tea nobody had asked for. He leaned over her shoulder. 'My sister had one of those,' he said. 'You couldn't get them off in a playground. Put it on and wore it till it went grey and then wore it some more.' Ruth nodded and wrote nothing else in the book, and the tea went cold on the counter between them.

She hung the choker on the brass hook by the door, where things waited a week before they went to the charity shop. Tomorrow was her last shift. The next clerk would find a hook full of coats and one ring of looping colour and wonder who had left it. Somebody might come asking. If nobody did, it would hang there and fade from the top down, the way the best things did in that office.
