Mr Ambrose paid for the attic room in pennies and left his letters folded inside the lid of the tea caddy, so I was usually the first to read them. He wrote in circles. Not drawings of circles, but rings that overlapped like dropped coins, each one carrying smaller arcs and dots in its belly. I spent my first winter learning that a dot sitting on a shoulder meant a debt, and a dot in the centre meant a promise.

By February I could read a page faster than I could read the psalms my mother had sent me off with. Ambrose climbed the stairs at dusk, smelling of gaslight and wet wool, and checked my copying through a brass loupe. "You press too hard on the left-hand ring," he said once. "Ink pools where the hand rests. Keep it light, Nell, or the whole sentence sinks." I kept it light. I kept everything light for him, and he rewarded me by leaving the caddy lid unlatched.

On the last night of March the letter was short. Six rings, one arc cutting through them like a saw blade, and in the middle a dot no bigger than a pinhead. I copied it three times to be sure. When I carried the copy down to the kitchen, the house was silent and the clock on the dresser had stopped at a quarter past nine, its hands folded over the face like a shut book.

I wrote my reply in his hand, the dot in the centre, and left it beneath the caddy lid where he would find it. Then I took the key from the drawer, opened the clock's case, and started winding it again from the beginning.
